Our Senior Citizens

Senior Recreation

Recreation in our later years may be a little more subdued than it once was.   That does not limit us from taking the plunge (literally) into that great whitewater rafting experience, a little hike to the top of Mount Shasta,  fly fishing in Colorado, or a snorkeling experience off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

How about some great Alaska Fishing or Georgia Bass fishing?  Many of our fellow seniors are full time recreational vehicle users.

For some it may be a round of golf on one of the courses you have only seen on the golf channel.  For others it may be white water rafting, a Caribbean cruise, hiking in the outback, or just a walk in the park.

As the generation of baby boomers ages, older adults will account for a growing percentage of the labor force. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2000 13 percent of the workforce was age 55 or older; by 2015 that number is expected to rise by 20 percent.

Several recent studies have drawn a correlation between physical activity and better health among senior citizens. Along with appropriate physical exercise, it is important for people to challenge their minds as well to help improve their quality of life.  So it is no great secret that part of that equation is activity, either physical or mental.

This can be experienced in many ways and through different forms.  White water rafting, trips, vacations, mountain climbing, deep sea diving and many other experiences.  Go to your local extension service and take some classes.  Take a cruise, start ballroom dancing, join a fitness center or lift weights. But just get out and do something.
